3 things to avoid when being consulted

Many individuals today consider a career as a business consultant in a business consulting firm because of the great future this type of industry offers. Especially the young generation, the modern generation today, a lot of these people would like to be in the business consulting industry because of the good pay or good money that it can gain you. When you are a business consultant whether self-employed or connected with a firm, this career offers you the chance to travel locally or internationally. It also offers a lot of chances to meet people from different industries and different walks of life and most of all, the freedom to do your thing. You are not time-tied just like an ordinary employee that goes to work for a fixed number of hours and days.

But before jumping into anything, if you really are serious in pursuing your future as a business consultant, you should understand the basics behind this interesting career. One of the must know are the things that you should avoid when consulting such as:

  1. Avoid thinking or acting like you know everything. When consulting especially in small business consulting, instead of telling the people in the company what they should do, a good consultant listens and asks questions before giving recommendation. Yes, you may have done some research and read something about this company consulting you but the fact remained, they know about their company and their business more than you. If you avoid this “know it all” attitude you are not only helping the company as a consultant but also can gain the trust and build a professional relationship with the people within.

  2. Avoid too many slides in your presentation. Your purpose as a consultant is to help your client clear things out and not confuse them. Hundreds of slides in a presentation, which most consultants have, do not really help. These people might get tired and bored and both you and the company will not get anywhere. Keep it simple and concise is the key when presenting your plans. Straight to the point and clarity will both get you and the company to your goals.

  3. Avoid being tagged or identified to anyone in the company consulting you. Usually, a consultant when invited by an organization is being sponsored by a manager or a project in-charge. You should avoid to act as though the sponsor is the only person that matter and that as if you are only working for him. As we know, in any organization, politics also exists, when your sponsor quits of get fired, your connection or service with the company will also be endangered. So, avoid this aspect to ensure that you will not get affected by inside politics.

As you go on your career, you will learn some things along the way, however, these 3 you should always remember. These are referred sometimes as the most common mistakes even an experienced business consultant can commit.
